My Own Robotic History
In high school I was in robotics. I was part of the First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 11. Each team has a number and there are over 1,000 teams within Australia, Brazil, Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Mexico. My intentions of joining robotics weren't always pure, I joined for my boyfriend at the time, but after the first class, I knew I had made the right decision in dropping AP Studio Art for Intro to Robotics.
Because of the wonderful experience I had in the class as well as the team, I have changed my views on robots. I learned Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, which gave me an understanding of the fact that robots will never truly take over the world. Once I came to this realization, I began to love Robotics. I worked on the drive train of the robot had initially intended to go to school for mechanical engineering in order to build robots for the rest of my life.
I obviously did not pursue that life goal, but I did help build an amazing robot that went to the First Robotics Championship in Atlanta, Georgia. The robot was built within the team. Because we built our own robot, we had a connection to the robot. We did not see the robot as a person but we saw it as something we had worked hard on, much like someone might see their own writing if they have worked on it every day for six weeks for between two to ten hours a day.
Because of this deep connection with the robot I had helped design and build, I started to look at all robots differently. I started to see robots as something that is there to help us, whether it be in our daily lives, special circumstances, or for entertainment.
